Course objectives

This course is designed to provide the learner a background about pregnancy and the changes that occur in the woman’s body. These changes require modification of the methods of providing oral health care. In addition to the changes that occur in the pregnant woman’s body the learner learns the necessary steps to modify his or her way of treatment to comfort the mother and protect the fetus. General considerations as well as the indications for an obstetrical consultation are provided. Moreover the learner is to learn the timing and sequence of providing oral care as well as precautions in handling routine dental care, oral infections and orofacial pain. Categories of medications and their safety use for pregnant women in dentistry are listed.
